'Water car' scam | |
คนว่างวันอาทิตย์ช่วยตอบ | Up to 90% improved fuel economy has been claimed mushrooming numbers of the so-called water-powered or HHO gas systems for cars. Can they be true?Published: Bangkok Post, 26-02/2010. Since the fuel crisis in the 1970s, home-made modifications aimed at improving fuel economy of existing cars have been worked up like frenzy as consumers understandably panicked by skyrocketing fuel prices or, worse, their shortages.
One of those solutions sold in the US at the time involved a simple bolt-on kit that converts plain tap water into hydrogen that gets fed into the engine. They are claimed to improve fuel economy so much they offset the cost of the kit with a few tankfuls of petrol. Then the fuel crisis went away and the cars began to be much more economical to run, so the fad faded into oblivion. With the second major fuel shock of the last couple of years, the water-powered kits quickly grabbed the attention of many more car users around the world including Thailand. In essence, they all claim that tap water is the cheapest energy source costing only a few satang per litre and that the car and energy companies have long tried to cover up their wonderful quality as energy form. These kits are claimed to be very simple to install as they can be fitted to any type of engine (petrol, diesel, LPG or CNG) and any fuel feed system (carburetor, indirect or direct-injection). They cost anything from a few thousand baht for a single cylinder motor scooter to B50,000 or more for commercial trucks. They all point to the established car makers pioneering hydrogen-powered cars, both the straight hydrogen to combustion kind and the hydrogen fuel-cell type, to validate their claims that hydrogen is the cheap and reliable future of car fuel. They all tried to ridicule car makers that use sophisticated and prohibitively costly means of utilising hydrogen to fool consumers that it is currently expensive fuel costing equivalent of several millions of baht per car thus why no hydrogen-powered car is on the Thai market today. First they say that so much energy is used up to make liquid or gaseous hydrogen by these car and oil companies that they cannot be recuperated by the highly efficient fuel cell powertrain. The current trial lease runs of hydrogen-powered cars in the world today are led by BMW whose Hydrogen 7 can be refueled with liquid hydrogen in one or two bespoke hydrogen filling stations in California, USA. That car uses a conventional engine that would otherwise run on petrol but instead modified to run on hydrogen. The other is the Honda FCX Clarity, also in California, whose electric motors are powered by electricity generated by hydrogen fuel cell with any excess energy stored in batteries. What the kits vendors do not tell you is that the more power needed by the kit, the more power it uses from the battery. One car maintenance workshop told Motoring that many cars running with these kits came in for help as the engine could not idle smoothly. They found that the added gas messed up the air-fuel mixture and that one viable solution for the kit vendor was to have each and every car tuned with their diagnostic equipment. But the guy at the workshop also conceded that he would never try the hydrogen kit with his own or his customers" car for fear of unforeseeable danger and waste of money. For argument sake, if the kit works then yes it might help wean the country from oil imports. But they certainly void the manufacturers" warranty the very moment they are fitted to the car as they are modifications explicitly permitted by the car makers. To answer whether hydrogen kits are credible, one vice-president of a major car maker in Thailand said: "There"s no such thing that can give you nearly enough fuel savings the sum you paid for. And do not forget that it voids the warranty." When asked why the company doesn"t announce that they do not work, the executive said: "Please don"t drag us down to their level. Consumers are smart enough to make their own good decisions." |
